Leaving and Getting There: The Alaska Trip

What began months ago when winter still loomed supreme became reality yesterday morning as we loaded the luggage, and headed to Valdosta Regional Airport to catch the noon flight to Atlanta. On the way we were surprised by a flock of Canadian geese crossing a back road to the airport. We hope this is just the first of our wildlife adventure. We whiled away the time in the terminal with Klep using the net book and me beginning The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, a book I had been saving for the trip.

The flight to Atlanta went well with plenty of time to get to our gate and grab a sandwich to share. We were in seats 1A and 1B in first class for our seven hour flight across the country. Since I planned to read my way to Alaska, Klep sat in the window seat. We loved the space and the coddling of sitting in first class. Thanks Rob and Traci! Your sky mile gift was much appreciated! We had a lovely lunch with real dishes and silverware, just like Sunday dinner at home. Klep enjoyed the view of the rivers, planes, and finally the Rocky Mountains as we crossed the Midwest and exited north of Minnesota into Canada.

Finally, he spotted the Glaciers as we crossed over the Yukon Territory into Alaska. We were soon on the ground, collecting baggage, marvelling at the mountains, and headed to the Crowne Plaza for the night. By eight o'clock local time we were settled in our room.

We will spend today adjusting to the time change. We awoke to a cloudy sky. We are here to celebrate the longest period of days with significant rain for Anchorage. Even though Alaska is having a little heat wave, the temperature still should not hit eighty. This afternoon we will join our tour.
